Abstract

Candida parapsilosis is a yeast fungus that is resistant to some antifungal drugs. This study investigated the resistance profile of C. parapsilosis against the main antimycotics (azoles, amphotericin B, 5-flucytosine, voriconazole and echinocandins). A systematic literature review was developed, considering the inclusion and exclusion criteria determined in the methodology. Resistance to polyenes and echinocandins is uncommon in C. parapsilosis. Although this species is normally sensitive to azoles, there is a low frequency of antifungal resistance for this class of drugs, mainly for voriconazole. Additionally, C. parapsilosis may also exhibit antifungal resistance to flucytosine. Therefore, strategies are suggested to prevent and avoid the appearance of resistance to antifungals, such as, for example, the correct identification at the species level and the choice of an antifungal more suitable for the same, correct use in the dosages of the drug, adherence of the treatment, monitoring changes in the yeast susceptibility profile and epidemiological surveillance studies.
