Abstract

With the population aging, the demand for medicines that decrease discomfort or treat diseases tend to increase. Considering that the pharmacokinetics and the pharmacodynamics are altered on elder people, making them more vulnerable to the presence of chronic degenerative diseases and adverse reactions, the goal of this study was to validate the existence of potential interactions between medicine and food in a group of elder people with the same 60 years old or more. Databases that contained the medicines’ posology regimen, anthropometric measurement and food diary were evaluated. According to the anthropometric measurement and body mass index, 60% (n=27) of the evaluated patients showed an underweight condition. In total, there were 79 different medicine among the 332 constant prescriptions in the medical charts and 29 of them with potential to interact with nutrients. Among the anatomical therapeutic chemical classification, the most prescribed medicines were from the group C - Circulatory System (41%), N - Nervous System (34%) and A - Alimentary Canal and Metabolism (10%). When comparing the prescriptions to the dietary intakes, the possible interactions were related essentially to minerals, complex B and D vitamins. Thus, the role of the multidisciplinary team is crucial to guarantee a short risk of intercorrence in the treatment.
